Red Seal Tilesetter Practice Exam

Using a level or laser level is a widely accepted technique to check for level during tile installation because these tools provide precise measurements on flat surfaces. A standard spirit level can reveal subtle deviations from a horizontal plane by using a bubble suspended in liquid. A laser level, on the other hand, projects a continuous line or dot of light across the surface, allowing for even greater accuracy across larger areas. This is especially beneficial in large installations where maintaining a consistent level is critical.

While other tools like a straight edge, measuring tape, or plumb line may be helpful for different purposes in tile setting, they do not offer the same level of precision for checking horizontal alignment. A straight edge can help identify low or high spots, but it requires visual assessment and manual judgment. A measuring tape is primarily used for measuring distances and layouts but does not indicate levelness. A plumb line is more suited for vertical orientation, making it less applicable for checking horizontal surfaces. Therefore, using a level or laser level is the most reliable and commonly practiced technique in tile installation to ensure that surfaces are perfectly level.
